From Our Viewpoint

I sometimes imagine that I am walking a narrow path that winds between two beckoning Sirens, whose songs seek to seduce me into giving myself into their embrace.  On my left is the Spirit of Loving Protection promising to nurture me, and provide for my needs in the community of Spirit.  On my right, is the often frightening, always challenging Spirit of Knowledge seeking to entice my trust with promises of undeniable order and the absolute Self-determination of science.

I cling to that narrow way as if my Soul depends on it.  It does, for to listen exclusively to one would deny me the opportunity to understand the other.

For me, reality is not so easily defined as being dominated by Spirit, nor is it dominated by the single-minded rule of the scientific method.  I believe there is a middle way, in which I may honor the divinity of my existence, while accepting my responsibility to know the nature of reality.  And so I see this path as Balance, and resist surrendering my Self-determination in exchange for the protection of a benevolent Creator, even as I remain mindful that there is purpose in Nature’s Laws that must surely have a divine origin.

I tell you this because traditional mediumship looks like something that is of the Spirit of Loving Protection, while EVP appears to be of the Spirit of Knowledge.  In less dramatic terms, mediumship seems to be a specifically spiritual phenomenon and EVP appears to be purely technology based.  In my view, EVP and mediumship are two aspects of the same phenomenon.  Our work with EVP rests squarely on this middle way.  Recognizing this helps me see that EVP is a natural extension of my search for spiritual maturity.

In clinical terms, mediumship is known as the conveyance of nonphysical information into the physical through human facilities.  In popular terms, mediumship is the process of communicating messages from spirit to the living.  Most systems of belief hold that there is a mental form of mediumship and a physical form.  If I tell you that I have a message from your recently transitioned father, I am bringing you a message through mental mediumship.  If I enable your father's words to be heard "in the air," so to speak, then I am operating as a physical medium.

Experience is showing us that EVP is a form of physical mediumship, in that the effectiveness of a particular recording arrangement is often dependent on the experimenter who is operating it.  We do not know this with certainty, but it seems that this is so.

For instance, after reading published material about the germanium device and the fact that the Scole Group did receive some messages without the device installed in their recorder, Lisa commented that the recorder was a little like an electronic trumpet.  Can you imagine that?  For those of you who are unfamiliar with mediumship, a conical tube called a trumpet is sometimes used to act as a voice box for spirit voices.  This is a form of physical mediumship.

Whether or not mediumship is involved in EVP is an important question for me.  As I seek to walk the middle way, I am mindful that ours is a spiritual world made physical by our worldview.  Our friends on the other side, whom we seek to contact, have shown us that we can communicate with them through our mediumship.  This channel of communications is really a bridge that must be carefully constructed from both ends by cooperating entities--both in spirit and in the flesh.  This is mediumship in its fullest.

Should you find it intimidating to think that you must be a medium before you can be successful at EVP, allow me to point out that we are all mediums in our own right.  And, it is this message that I wish to bring to you now.  You practice mediumship every time you think of your friends who have transitioned out of their physical life.  The difference between you and a trained medium is that you may not have learned to recognize those small voices and faint impressions that come to you as genuine communication with spirit. The good news is that you can easily learn to listen to these voices, and by trying to learn, I believe you will see differences in your work with EVP.

To me, the middle way is a way of looking at my world in an effort to recognize and understand the influence of Spirit in the operation of technology--and everything else for that matter.  This is not about religion.  It is about learning to see the larger reality as a natural extension of my world.  I bring this idea to you now because experience has shown that not recognizing the influence of Spirit in our lives makes it more difficult to accept the reality of EVP.  If you accept that you are part of the EVP circuit, then you leave open the possibility that you can influence EVP communication simply by wanting to.  You are a medium and the EVP device is a tool that you use to facilitate your communication with Spirit.

The Sirens of Loving Protection and of Knowledge present convincing arguments, but it is best to hear them as a chorus, rather than as separate songs.

GAIT Project Update

The GAIT Project no longer exists.

Dale Palmer, one of the founders of GAIT, has written to us with updates on this important project.  (We have combined excerpts from two updates.)

“I think most of you know that by early next year we hope to have a Computer Center built and operating where anyone in the world, who has a computer and is on the Internet, can log on and do his or her own communications with persons in other dimensions of reality.  One will hopefully also be able to store one's own secret code so that after transition one can communicate and use that code which can then be authenticated at the Computer Center.

“Noetics Institute has now purchased a new high speed computer.  It should be able to handle several people over the Internet from any place in the world all doing communications at the same time. Only last week we finally, after four months of waiting, have installed a new state-of-the-art fiber-optic cable to feed the computer. This new fiber-optic line can reportedly handle a half million images per day.

“Our team of electrical engineers is now in the 14th month of their 18-month assignments.  All research and development is right on schedule.  You might keep your fingers crossed that when they all give their final reports in late December and we put them all together - they do work.  It is our hope and our plan that we have software, etc. like no other in the world.  We have electrical engineers working in several different areas of assigned research.  One is working to create software that will enhance the level of the voices so that everyone, even the hearing impaired like me, can hear them.  Another is working on software to decompress the voices i.e. make them time variant i.e. space them apart so that anyone can detect the correct enunciation without playing them over and over.

“We believe we do have the knowledge to make it work.  We believe we also have the expertise to design and build the technology to do it.  However, we do not yet have the knowledge of why it works.  The answer to why is beyond the boundaries of the current scientific paradigm.  This "why" is what we are now trying to understand.  And, we shall, be it God's will.  But, in order for us to understand this "why" we will have to experience a quantum jump in our thinking and understanding.  We must come to realize that this entire physical dimension is only a very tiny part of all reality.  Also, that our own short visits into this physical dimension are only a very tiny part of our own personal reality.”

EVP Recording Experiment

Many of the members of the AA-EVP Egroup have been participating in an experiment to see if a group recording effort will make a difference.  As of 24 September, we have recorded five consecutive Sunday evenings. We expect the experiments to continue for a time, and then pause for the holidays.

The questions have been changed each week, but all have been designed to determine who we are receiving information from and if there is anything to be done to improve communications.  Members have been using their usual recording apparatus, and are reported their results to a special email address.  The results are then compiled and report them back to the experimenters for review.

Thus far, there have been no “breakthroughs” for the group, but some of the experimenters have had personal successes that seem to be related to the group effort.  Messages, such as “we will help,” or “we are trying,” are common.  In answer to the question "Do your messages come to us by thought or do you have equipment like we do," two experimenters received the answer, “thought.”

Discussions have also focused on some interesting characteristics of recording.  For instance, many have reported hearing—even recording—a distinctive sound before recording voices.  The sound seems to be different for each experimenter, but happens often enough to make one wonder if it is not the entity keying in a microphone or some kind of transmitting equipment.

The Egroup provides nearly real-time communications, which is excellent for conducting a weekly experiment.  We have given much thought to how people who are not on the Internet could participate in these experiments.  If you are interested in participating but are not on Internet, do not have a friend on the Internet who can help or cannot use a library Internet service, you could still lend us your energy by recording Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern or 6 p.m. Pacific time.  You could also send your weekly results to our physical address or to ....  We will report on the experiment results in future newsletters.

The experimenters are generally in agreement that this experiment should be an ongoing effort.  The primary objective is to see what a group effort will produce, but it also gives us an opportunity to collectively ask the same questions and compare the results.

EVP and Germanium

Most of you know of the Scole Group in England.  Their usual mode of experimentation is reminiscent of the séances of old.  Around 1997, they received messages from their Spirit contacts that have led them into EVP experimentation.  This information centered on the use of a piece of germanium (Ge) in an electronic circuit, as shown in the drawing accompanying this article.

In the drawing, coils A and B are “high resistance” (~5000 ohms), iron core coils.  The coils are connected at opposite polarities and positioned so that the resulting magnetic field will bathe the Ge block with opposing lines of force (my assumption).  As used by the Scole Group, the block of Ge is about 3 x 2.5 x 1 mm.  It is placed in a circuit between a supporting electric conductor and an electric conductor that can be pressed against the opposite side.  A “slight” amount of pressure is applied in this way.  The Group used a rubber pad under the supporting conductor to absorb some of the pressure.  The two sides of the circuit at the “output” are then attached to the recording device.

Please note that we have not constructed this device, and so, we are making a number of assumptions.  The entities in contact with the Scole Group gave them a circuit diagram on a piece of photographic film, and later advised them to move the coils closer to the Ge.  Even though the diagram given by the entities appears to make a point about having the coils reversed, the Group seems to have used them in parallel with success.

The circuit is not powered, but there is some power at the input to the recording device.  Nonprofessional equipment is usually unbalanced: input at tip, ground at ring.  This circuit should be treated as an active, inductive circuit.  As such, you may want to tune the output to match the high impedance recorder input and the impedance of the device.  If so, we would all like to know your initial measurements and the circuit you used for matching.

Variations on this circuit might be the introduction of a different material than Ge, changes in pressure, size of the material, and type and size of the coils (telephone ringer coils have been suggested).  The active region of this device seems to be the null magnetic field-Ge couple.  Ge is a crystalline material and pressure will probably invoke some current in it because of the piezoelectric effect.

Jeff King and Gary Nixon report that they have successfully used Ge diodes in place of this entire circuit.  This makes it clear that we have much to learn.  We would like to see people build and experiment with this device, and then report back with the results.  If you need more information, please contact us at our email or the T or C address.  The Scole Group address is New Spiritual Science Foundation, P.O. The Alpha Mystery

Many of you have commented on the July 2000 Fate Magazine article by Jose Feola titled, The Alpha Mystery.  This very readable article describes Alexander MacRae’s discovery of how his Alpha device could be used in EVP.

Alexander began researching EVP in 1979.  As part of his study, he developed a biofeedback device designed to detect changes in the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) of mediums.  The Alpha, as he named it, included self-balancing circuitry that caused a light to change color as the GSR changed.  It also generated audible tones that changed in frequency with a change in GSR.

Alexander made several of these devices and sent them to EVP experimenters for testing.  It is when he was conducting experiments of his own that the Spirit of Serendipity intervened.  Alexander had placed the Alpha device on a clock radio that he had accidentally left on, but that was tuned off-station.  He was connected to the Alpha, and quite unexpectedly found that sounds came from the radio in response to his every movement.  Even his surprise registered as a change in sound.  Alexander later used a tape recorder so that he could dictate notes about his experiment.  With the Alpha device in close proximity to a radio and a tape recorder recording the resulting sounds, he discovered that he had stumbled across a most effective tool for EVP.  And, as they say, the rest is history.

Spirit Energy

Linda Sperti has been taking pic­tures with 'Spirit Energy' in them since 1992.  She writes that every year at Christ­mas she has taken several pictures with unex­plained "stuff" in them and feels that it is her departed mother who still visits the family for Christmas. The photo shows a gathering ball of mist that transforms into a loop of coiled energy on the next picture (not included).

Linda always gets something in her photographs when she visits a haunted site.  There are mists, globes, huge drapery type phenomena, red, white, green and even black energy.  Linda never sees anything unusual while she is taking the pictures.

A Member’s EVP Set Up

If you are at all like us, then you like to know how other EVP/ITC researchers are set up to record.  It often gives us new ideas and offers us a comparison to our own recording style and equipment.  We have received information on this from several people, some giving us more elaborate information than others.  We would like to hear from more of you with detailed information on how you receive your voices, pictures, or printed paranormal material.  In this issue we will cover Bill Weber and hope to cover others in future newsletters.

Bill uses a Radio Shack SW-100 multi band radio tuned to approximately 125.9 MHz for white noise.  He uses a battery amplified unidirectional microphone feeding into a high quality JVC W318 dual cassette deck to record.  The microphone is set near the radio speaker.

Bill hears bass tones before some Class A voices speak and thinks that this might be some sort of ‘subcarrier’ for spirit vocal manifestation. He has noticed that the Airband 125.9 MHz contains upper, midrange and lower harmonics and has observed the spirits using the energy from the lower radio harmonic for vocal manifestation.  The lower harmonic sometimes fades before and during vocal manifestation.

Bill does not meditate before recording.  If something important needs to be asked, he will tell the spirits the night before, letting them know what he will be asking the next day when he records.  He often experiences increased clairaudient phenomena before he falls asleep when he does this.

Bill says that he finds it interesting that he has gotten loud, clear voices in direct “person to person calls” using only a radio at 125.9 MHz as white noise.  We have heard Bill’s tapes and know what he means by this.  Bill calls on a specific person during recording and repeatedly asks questions of that specific person.  For instance, “John Doe I would like to hear from you,” “John Doe can you give me a message,” "John Doe do you have a message for your wife,” etc.  Bill writes that if he does not ask for a particular person to speak he usually gets no results, unlike many others who succeed at the “open mic” method.  He writes, “It seems the only results I’ve gotten have been in the ‘person to person calls, but the good news is that I have not yet received a long distance bill!  Ha Ha…”

Technician and Scalar Waves

Dr, Ernst Senkowski  has written to clarify a reference to him in the Underground Antenna article of the Spring 2000 newsletter (page 4, para. 3).  The entity, Technician, was quoted as telling Dr. Senkowski that “the spiritual realms do not use 'Hertzian' waves as their primary form of communication.” Dr. Senkowski’s clarification:

“The published form of the quote is not correct.  But there have been two corresponding statements of Technician:

“1) December 1986: (comparing ITC with electromagnetically based Seti research).  Technician: ‘. . . It would be still more important to invent small(est) devices, in/by which five-dimensional field-pulses could possibly be registered, instead (using) a roundabout way via the nerves of animals or humans or rabbits.  Some hope could be derived from the fact that the human brain seems to possess the best technological facilities of reception.  This could be a road sign.’

“2) 17 October 1987 in the presence of Tina Laurent/England and myself.  Question Senkowski: ‘Can the effect of the two diodes [at the time used by the couple Harsch-Fishbach] be described as a scalar-wave interferometer in the sense of the explanations of Thomas Bearden respective Nicola Tesla?’  Technician: ‘That is a correct designation.’

“Comment: Five-dimensional field-pulses refer to the six-dimensional system (General Field Theory) of the German theoretician Burkhard Heim in which the fifth imaginary coordinate describes structural fields similar to the morphogenetic fields of Rupert Sheldrake.  They may be identified with scalar or Tesla-waves.

“There has been another hint via a German deep-trance medium in my presence: ‘For ITC the infinite speed of tachyons/mind-fields must be reduced to enable informatory interaction with terrestrial electromagnetic systems.  Scalar waves are the intermediate stage.’

“I hope to have been a little helpful!  My best – sincerely yours, Ernst.”

• Franklin J. Hemerlein, CA, wrote to us and told us that several years ago he had picked up a book in a Used Book Store called Voices From the Tapes by Peter Bander.  He joined the AA-EVP shortly after reading this book.  Franklin is a professional musician since 1925 when he played the pipe organs for the silent pictures!
  

• In the last newsletter we mentioned using three radios turned to foreign language stations for background noise when recording.  Alexander MacRae, wrote to us that this technique was invented by the late Gilbert Bonner, who never received credit for it and who produced what is still possibly the best EVP recordings ever made.
  

Tapers Report

• Clara Laughlin, VA, received EVP messages from her sister Elsa and Dr. Bill Callie on May 4.  The messages were, “Sister dies in spring, Elsa.” "Expect sister dies, Bill” and “Harriet dies, Callie.”  On May 17, Harriet died unexpectedly.  On May 22 Clara received more messages about Harriett from Mercedes Shepanik.  They were:  “Harriett walks in with a chest condition, cancer.”  “We have a female here,” and “She had a pain.”  In addition there was a message on the tape from Harriett:  “Glad to get my pain away.”
  

• Art Counts, MD, wrote that he tries to tape once a day.  During a recent EVP taping session he asked, “If anyone can hear me, please come in.”  When he played his tape back he found a voice just a few seconds after he had asked this question.  The masculine voice said, “Yes, can hear you.”
  

• Dale Sizemore, SC, records voices with a tape recorder but also gets messages on his answering machine.  A recent message left on his machine sounded like jumble of background voices.  He thought that it was perhaps the background voices of those in cubicles in a telemarketing operation.  But when he listened more closely he thought he heard “Died” as the last word.  He removed the microcassette from the answering machine and played it back at different speeds using headphones on a microcassette recorder.  The EVP messages on the tape were “I’m not worth anything, so please get out of my life” followed by “Nancy called” and “I just died.”
  

• Anne Smisko, VA, asked during a recent taping session “Do you read me?” and received these messages from her late husband Michael:  “Perfect.  Just miss you.”  “We get nowhere.”  “Believe it and know it.”  “I will meet with Anne.”  “Smisko here.”
  

•    Bill Weber, FL was recently taping and heard a change in the tone of the white noise coming in on the scanner.  He says, “I heard a change in the tone on the radio about a minute ago” on the tape.  Forty five seconds later a male voice says, “You bet. There’s more power involved.”  Bill felt the voice was that of a technician and liked that the entity used the term ‘you bet’ as it is a term Bill also uses.

Acoustical EVP

You may like to try using something like water glasses to improve the effectiveness of background sound during recording.  We set the microphone on the floor between the open end of two large water glasses during recording sessions.  You could also place the microphone near the hole in a guitar—anything that will improve reverberation of ambient sound.  Let us know how this idea works for you.

Hello From Heaven!

The ADC Project was created in May 1988 to conduct the first in-depth research of After-Death Communications.  The founders, Bill and Judy Guggenheim, interviewed 2,000 people and collected more than 3,300 firsthand accounts from people who believe they have been contacted by a loved one who have died.

We were able to chat with Judy on a recent trip to California where she was conducting a workshop for the California State Spiritualist Association Convention.  Hello From Heaven, written by the Guggenheims, contains 353 ADC accounts.  This paperback book is available at all major bookstores.

Members Share ADC experiences

• Dorothy Palleske of Colorado sent us a letter in which she described the beauty of her husband Siegwalt's transition.  She writes that she noticed him looking intently at something in mid-air, and when she asked him what he was looking at, he told her a "a very lovely face."  Later that day he started tracking something on the ceiling and said "Oh yes, now I see!" and "Oh, now I understand!"
  
  Within two weeks of his passing Dorothy began receiving phone calls.  Dorothy was skeptical at first and checked these calls by dialing star 6-9—the telephone company registered no number.  She has had over eighty phone calls, all when there was something happening around her that was related to her husband.
  
  Dorothy feels that the reason her husband uses the telephone to contact her is because they were both very interested in the Luxembourg group.  She says that he always had hoped to receive a call from Konstantine Raudive, in which they could have conversed in German.
  

• Rev. Sandy Phortmiller, Phoenix, is co-minister of the Church of The Living Spirit, NSAC.  Sandy's stepfather made his transition in November.  One night in early May, Sandy’s mother thought she heard noises and that someone was breaking into the house.  She saw the materialized form of her husband get off the bed and go out the door of the bedroom and with that the noises stopped.
  
  When Sandy went to Minnesota to help her mother open the summer place she felt that the presence of her father very strongly.  The small community is built around a golf course and everyone communicates by CB.  The second day that they were there, they turned the CB on and later heard, loud and clear, "I am here."
  
  Other things have happened in the house.  The TV has turned on by itself. Greeting cards disappear only to show up the next day in a conspicuous place.  Sounds are heard like something heavy has fallen, but upon investigation nothing is out of place.
